Little did I know, these would be the perfect tool for exploring scientifically on the light table.

It was too cold to go outside, so we brought the snow in and made snowy sensory bags. Just the other day, it was -15 degrees outside and snow was everywhere. The light from the table is excellent for enhancing the features and properties of an object, allowing children to see what they are exploring in a whole new way! By creating an inviting learning space, children are encouraged to engage in learning activities through play without even realizing it. Light tables can be used for literacy, math, music, writing, and science. We have been doing a lot of light table explorations, but one of our favorite activities happened after the first snow the other day. The story has been no different in our home since we got a new light table. Use stickers to make the moon, sun and stars. Show dark and light, day and night, and sources of light in the sky. Children are naturally drawn to the light table and all that it has to offer. Children learn that the sun is our main source of energy. My older kids, Kindergarten aged, also used this to practice sight words.When I taught preschool and elementary grades, the light table and overhead center were the two most popular places in the room. Manipulating those small acorns can be tricky for small hands but it’s a simple way to strengthen those small motor muscles needed for learning to write in the future. There is lots of learning going on here! Kids are learning to recognize and form letters and doing some fine motor work.

Just remember if you are using these with young children you should be keeping a close eye to make sure the loose parts don’t end up in their mouth. Use all the letter cards for large groups or only use a few at a time to reinforce letter recognition with toddlers and preschoolers. Kids can use the acorns to trace each letter. Place the letter cards and the acorns on your light table and you are set up.

Add some acorn gems and you are ready to go! It’s one of those super easy alphabet games to get up. I laminated out letter cards when I was done cutting them out so that they would last longer, plus I love my laminatior so I’ll take any chance to use it. Once you have them downloaded you just need to print and cut.

However we had a great time with it on the light table. For us we use this ABC tracing game in the fall and winter months so we generally use acorns as loose parts to trace the ABCs with but you can all kinds of things!ĭon’t have a light table?
